Gear Return December
---------------------------
Hello Hoofers!
A most happy December to everyone! It is your HOC VP emailing with an important message. I am declaring this month "Gear Return December"! In other words, gear amnesty has been granted. If you have in your possession a piece of club gear, you are requested to return it promptly and no questions will be asked. Please bring gear to the 7pm Tuesday meetings (12/1, 12/8, 12/15) or get in touch with any activity chair or anyone emailing the club listserv to return club gear. Any and all Hoofer Outing Club members are encouraged to participate in this month long event.
Thanks!

UW-Stevens Point - Adventure Tours: Dublin, Isle of Man, Lake District

Subject: UW-Stevens Point - Adventure Tours
To: opo@hoofers.org
To Whom It May Concern:
For the past 30 years the School of Health Promotion and Human Development at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has offered hiking and biking tours to adults as a means of enhancing personal wellness. We have done this on a very limited budget and in fact have little advertising funds available to let people know of our wonderful excursions. Would you be willing to let your club members know of the attached hiking trip to Dublin, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Lake District of England? Participants who sign up by January 1st and submit a deposit can receive a $200 reduction in the cost of the trip.
I will lead this excursion and am very familiar with the hiking that we will encounter. It offers participants all levels of activity and is a wonderful exploration of many different cultures. If anyone would like more information, please have them call me at 715-340-4855. Thank you for assisting us in getting out the word on this hiking adventure.
Sincerely,
Dr. John Munson

Help enter memberships into the new database! 12/2
----------------------
So, we are currently building an All-Hoofer database of all memberships so that we have quick and easy access to membership information from individual emergency contacts to organization-wide statistics. This database will make a new website possible, including signup for trips, hopefully a calendar, etc. All current Hoofer memberships (from all 6 clubs) are in the database HOWEVER we have several years of previous memberships we would like to get into the database for statistics, so we can contact alumni, etc.
Many Hoofers have been working on membership entry, but the Outing Club has a LOT of members and many years of memberships to enter, so we would love even more help.
I am leading a trip into the Hoofer database to enter as many memberships as we can on Wednesday, December 2. I will be in the Hoofer Lounge at 5:30 pm on Wed, Dec. 2 (or elsewhere--I'll let you know-- if there's a meeting in there) with my laptop to enter memberships until I leave for climbing (7:30 if there's a second wave of climbers, 6:30 if not.) Everybody is encouraged to join me. The database is web-based, so bring a laptop with internet capability if you can, if not, we will find a Hoofer computer for you.
If you can drop by the main Hoofer office during some free time, Erin, the Hoofer intern, or Jim or Linda, the Hoofer advisors, can get you set up to enter memberships any time.
Email me if you're attending on Wednesday, but you're encouraged to show up even if you didn't let me know in advance.
Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Caroline

Union Renovation- updated contact info!
--------------------------
~~Old Info~~
After the construction of the new Union South, the UW plans to begin a renovation of the theatre wing of Memorial Union (~2011 or 2012). The entire Hoofers area is included in this project.
What we are asking for right now is ideas regarding the design of our new space. What would you like to see in the renovated Hoofers area? Are there things you like or don't like about the current setup? Is there a way we could improve meeting areas, work areas, the way we store and organize equipment, etc.? I will compile ideas from the Outing Club and bring them to the Hoofer Council members in charge of the planning. I would at least like to hear from every interest group.
--New Info--
I am compiling all Outing Club requests and will be handing a prioritized list of these to the committees who will begin drawing up plan ideas.
Kyle Olsen, our All-Hoofer renovations chair, would like suggestions from the clubs by next week Monday (December 7). If you have questions or would like to be more involved in the planning process, his email is ------> kylecolsen@gmail.com. <------ I had sent out an outdated email address in previous emails. Thank you very much if you have already given me input. If you haven't, please let me know your thoughts on this within the week. This isn't the absolute deadline for planning-- we're just trying to keep ahead of the Union plans so we can push for inclusion of everything we want. Thanks for your ideas!

Interest in House on The Rock holiday light show? 12/12
----------------
I would like to run a different sort of Hoofer trip on Saturday, Dec. 12--one where we drive to House on the Rock (near Spring Green, WI) and then spend the afternoon walking indoors though a myriad of eclectic rooms which have been lavishly decorated for the holidays. The admission is a little pricey (~$20), but as I understand is well worth it. You would also need to bring an extra $12 for gas and fast food. Tentative departure time is 9 AM from Park St. Circle and we would be back by 5 PM. Please e-mail kfrubert@wisc.edu if interested. Also, check out http://www.thehouseontherock.

Info on WI hunting seasons
-------------------
| Hunting is beginning to impact some Hoofer activities. Already there has been one special weekend of deer hunting, and there will be more. Some of you asked how you can know what is happening outdoors for the rest of the year. Here is a link to the DNR website page where you can look up hunting seasons when you are planning your outdoor activities. http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/ The website is complex, but for most of us, the most important season is the white-tailed deer season. As "gun-deer season" draws the greatest number of hunters, it is the most dangerous time for us to be in the woods. Dates will vary around the state, depending on whether or not an area is included in the CWD* eradication zone. |
A trip to Lake Wobegon (Prairie Home Companion)
------------------
Hi, Hoofers:
Do you have a Lutheran connection? Do you love the Prairie Home Companion? Do you like outdoor adventures?
If you say "yes", then, you should consider coming with us to Minneapolis for the Garrison Keillor show (Prairie Home Companion) and the Outdoor Adventure Expo hosted by the Midwest Moutaineering.
We will leave Madison after work on Nov 20 (Friday), drive to Minneapolis and stay in a motel (room sharing is possible if people are willing to do it). On Saturday, we go to Midwest Mountaineering, check out sales, free workshops, and free presentations (see the link below for specific info). Midwest mountaineering is an INDEPENDENT outdoor gear shop. It's huge and it's located in an interesting neighborhood. We will have authentic Cantonese food for lunch (authenticity certified by Nan). At 4:00pm. We will head to the theater for the Prairie Home Companion show.
Nov 22, we can return to the Outdoor Expos or the Minneapolis Art Museum. We will arrive in Madison no later than 9:00pm.
Cost: You are responsible for your food and the ticket to Garrison Keillor show: http://prairiehome.
We will car pool and share gas cost. We are open to room sharing for motel cost.
More info about Midwestern Moutaineering is at: http://www.

BOOD trip after next week's meeting
From: Richard Miller
------------------
Here's an invitation to go for BOOD (Beverages and fOOD) at The Brink Lounge after next week's meeting. Especially because my band will be taping on the Mad Toast Live! Podcast & Radio Show. We’ll be featuring some songs appropriate to Halloween for this special show.
The Brink Lounge - 701 E. Washington Ave (below the High Noon Saloon)
Tuesday Oct 27th - 8pm: Ken Lonnquist, 9pm: Water Street Bridge - $5 cover (optional but suggested)
What was born as the illegitimate brain child of Jon Baade and James Kuehl, Water Street Bridge has now turned into a fully grown bastard child of inane proportions. Realizing early on that enough is never enough, these two veterans of stage and studio teamed up with Michi Regier, on fiddle, and Richard Miller, on drums and percussion. Together they blend Celtic, blues, Americana, shanty, jazz, Creole, folk, art rock, reggae, Balkan beats, Slavic dance grooves, comedy and original songs into something that can only be described as “eclectic acoustic.”
Brandishing an impressive arsenal of musical instruments (including guitar, resonator guitar, mandolin, ukulele, fiddle, viola, pennywhistle, squeeze box, harmonica, doumbek, agogo, guiro, tupan and bodhran - just to name a few) they bring new life to tales of old, old sounds to tales of today and twisted takes on tales never meant to be told.
Hope to see you there,
Richard

Pier Out! Sunday, 1:00PM. Be there.
----------
Yo Everybody,
This coming Sunday, the 20th of October, we are doing the final lift out of the pier. It is gonna be super fun, the weather will be better than we could ever ask for...as in there will be a South wind...which means it will be warm, and there will be no waves. Afterward, there is discussion of trips out on the lake. I'm hoping we can finish in about 2 hours, which is totally doable if I get 4-6 people to come out.
All you new members! Get out and help support your club. It'll make you feel good inside.
Old members, you should come out because you already know how good inside it feels to help out the club.
So, I NEED to know if you can come. At least a rough estimate. Oh yeah, one word, pizza.
Wear work clothes, you're gonna be picking up wet boards and rusty beams. But don't worry, no one needs to get in the water.
Thanks in advance,
Evan

Curling!

Hey Hoofers,
Are any of you interested in curling? I've been fascinated by the sport for some time now since it's so silly, and it's the only Olympic sport where drinking is part of the rules. Seriously, all curling matches involve drinking beer afterward! Anyhow, the Madison Curling Club (http://www.

Open Hoofer Council Leadership Positions!
------------------
Greetings Hoofers,
I wanted to let everyone know about some exciting open positions on Hoofers Council. As you may know, Hoofer Council is the overall governing board for all of the Hoofer clubs, in addition to facilitating and planning our own events. We are approaching some exciting time as plans for the New Union South, including our climbing wall, are nearing completion, and preparations for the Historic Renovation of Hoofers Wing in MU are about to begin.
Hoofer Council needs to fill two important positions to aid in these endeavors. We have a vacancy for our Vice President of Administration, and our newly created Renovation Chair. The VP-Admin is a Council Executive and is involved in many important decisions and functions of the organization. The new Renovation Chair will work closely with the VP-Admin in helping to coordinate and plan for the renovation of the Hoofer space in the Union Renovation Project.
Both of these positions offer a huge leadership development opportunity and the chance to work with other important Union student and nonstudent leaders. Given the importance of these positions, we have decided to open applications to both Hoofers and Hoofer-recommend people through next Wednesday, Oct. 21st.
Please take a minute to look at both applications and position descriptions. Also keep in mind that you don’t have to be a Hoofer leader to qualify, and that you might know someone who would be a good fit who you could recommend to apply.
These are Presidential appointments, however VP-Programs Mindy Cummings (mjcummings@wisc.edu) and Secretary Nick Clarens (clarens@wisc.edu) will be reviewing all applications and helping in the screening proccess. Please feel free to contact either of them and get those applications in!
Thank you and get out there and enjoy the fall weather before we transition into winter sports!
Best,
Paul
