Sea Kayak at Lake Columbia this Saturday 1/16

In an effort to be sure we paddle once a month all year around, I’m leading a sea kayaking trip this Saturday Jan. 16th to Lake Columbia. The weather is supposed to be in the mid 30’s, so should be comfortable.

This time I’d like to set a paddling pace and give those muscles a tiny workout. So probably paddle 3 1/2 to 4 mph. We’ll probably do a sprint or two after we warm up.

Also, I want to take a little time to help folks on their forward stroke and we may practice other basic strokes a bit too.

I want to start loading boats about 10:00 at the Union. I hope to be back about 4 or 5 PM.

What you’ll need:

Warm when wet clothes. Wet suits required! Also a paddling jacket or drytop. Gloves and hats are a good idea too. Even though the water is warm, the wind can chill you when (and you will) get wet.

Dry, warm clothes to change into when we’re done. And a towel.

Food for lunch on the beach.

Lots of water.

Hoofer’s membership card.

Aprox. $6.00 for gas.

$2.00 for boat use.

Piranha repellent (according to Tom F.)

This trip will be open to SK1’s, SK0’s . We’ll be using sea kayaks this time.

I’m going to limit the trip size to 8 people. I can carry 2 boats, so I’ll need people to carry more boats.

SK Interest Meeting Tomorrow 12/15

Hi all,
Just a reminder, the Sea Kayaking interest group meeting will be this Tuesday (Dec 15) after the general outing club meeting (~7:30). We'll meet in the Rathskeller unless it's too noisy, in which case we'll retreat to the hoofer lounge.

The agenda is to vote on a new SK chair for the coming year. Anyone with an interest in sea kayaking is encouraged to come. Please let me know if you have any other items you wish to see added to the agenda.

SK Interest Meeting Postponed until 12/15

Due to the impending WINTER STORM, I won't be able to make it to the meeting tomorrow night. Let's reschedule the SK interest meeting for next week, Tuesday Dec 15 after the regular outing meeting (around 7:30).

The upside is this gives you all another week to send me nominations for our new chair! (and feel free to nominate yourself!)

Lake Mendota paddling Sunday afternoon 11/22

If anyone wants to paddle sea kayaks on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 pm, I will lead. It is supposed to be 57 degrees, so get out one more time before regular November weather comes to stay.

E-mail me at Connieenal@yahoo.com if you want to paddle for two hours. I need two people to make this happen. You need an SK1 rating and you will have to wear a wetsuit (the club owns some if you don't have one).

canoe trip Sunday 11AM

i would like to lead a quietwater river trip on Sunday, meeting at Park St Circle at 11am, and boating the Maunasha river, putting in at Langer Park in Marshall (30 km E of Madison), and paddling upstream, then back down. Plan is for a 3 hour paddle, and return circa 6PM. I require a lake rating in canoe, or a R1 or SK0 in kayak. Canoers would need warm clothes plus extra clothes in a waterproof bag; kayakers would need a wet suit and paddle jacket. Weather is predicted to be sunny, mild wind, high in low 50s. Vegetation should be various shades of gold,and copper. Email reply to me with boat rating, and whether you can transport boats.

SK0 lesson Oct 6 at 4:30 pm

SK0 lesson Tuesday October 6th at 4:30 pm. This will cover all the introductory skills to be able to take out the club's sea kayaks on Lake Mendota and beginner trips. You will need:

your kayak late rating and swim test
warm-while-wet clothing (I strongly recommend a wetsuit)
some type of water shoes
a towel and a dry change of clothes!

The lesson includes reminders of lake rules and paddling strokes, an introduction the specifics of a sea kayak, as well as an assisted rescue. That means you will be doing a wet exit and you will be swimming. I am strongly recommending a wetsuit, since the air temperature has dropped, and the lake will soon follow. If you don't have a wetsuit, the club does, so come 5-10 minutes early to pick one out.
