HOC Climbing Interest Group Meeting

From Jon Wood
-------------

Hey All,

The Hoofer Outing Club offers so much for its members to do and experience; ti really is a fantastic opportunity to get outside, have some adventures, learn new skills, and meet some great folks along the way. However, if you don't adapt you die, so to help keep the climbing portion of the HOC up-to-date there will be a climbing interest meeting on 1/26/2010 in the Hoofer Lounge after the regular HOC meeting. There are four main topics I would like to get feedback on:

1) Boulders Climbing Gym Trips
2) Climbing Trips
3) Possible gear purchasing
4) Climbing Education / Club Interaction

This is just my list of topics to hit on; if anyone has anything they would like to discuss I encourage that you come and share. As your climbing chairperson for the HOC, I really want to make sure that what is being offered is meeting the needs of club members and that cannot be done is without your help! The meeting should only take 30 minutes, however I'm very happy to stay longer. I look forward to hearing your thoughts, opinions, ideas, and concerns. If you have questions or concerns feel free to email me.

Thanks,
Jon

Boulders climbing Gym Trip 1/25/2010

From Jon Wood
-------------------

Hey All,

So this is the first official Boudlers trip of 2010! We will leave from PSC at about 7pm (more like 7:15pm hoofer time) and head over to Boulders for some climbing gym action. The plan is to stay until 10:00pm and the cost for the night pass is $XX.XX. If you need gear please show up at 6:45pm; we'll jump down to the lower office to grab you stuff. Anyone who can drive is welcome to it as my little Honda Civic can only hold a max of 4 people (5 people if folks don't mind being cozy).

For those of you who may be new to the whole Boulders trip thing here is some background: Boulders Climbing Gym is located on the east side of Madison off of Stoughton Road and Hwy 30. It is a great opportunity to introduce yourself to the world of climbing and to build your climbing skills. We leave from Park Street Circle (that psuedo Cul-du-Sac where Park street runs into Lake Mendota between Memorial Union and College Library) and return there after climbing. No prior climbing experience is needed; beginners are encouraged to come out and see if you like it. Boulders is also the primary location where you can earn your B1 rating for the Hoofer Outing Club.

If you have any questions on Boulders Trips, climbing in the Hoofer Outing Club, or can drive feel free to email me.

Thanks,
Jon

Quick on the Draw Climbing Competition

From: Jon Wood, Climbing Chair woodman519@gmail.com
---------------------

Hey All!

Ok, so this is not an official Hoofer Outing Club trip, but I wanted to let you all know of a great opportunity I hope you all take advantage of. It may be the dead of winter but the climbing action could not be hotter! I'm referring of course to the upcoming climbing competition at Adventure Rock Climbing Gym in Pewaukee, WI called Quick on the Draw! In it's 11th year now, Quick on the Draw is a great chance to see climbers from all over the Midwest do what they do best on the many walls of Adventure Rock. The link for the competition is found below:

http://www.adventurerock.com/events.html

I should also point out that those interested in competing should still try to sign up! There are people of all ages competing and all skill levels. Competing is a climbing competition is only as serious as you make it; most folks do it just for the fun of testing themselves and getting to meet other folks you love climbing as much as they do..

The gym is just a short one hour drive east of Madison and very easy to get to. If you are able to make it I strongly suggest coming to the comp and checking it out. I should point out that coming to see ( no compete in) the comp is FREE and there is a Culvers next door. What you'll see will be epic, but if missed it'll be tragic. Hope to see y'all there!

Climbing, Wednesday, Christmas Climbing Theme?

From: Morgan Leider tyrantsilkey@gmail.com
------------------

If anyone is interested in Climbing on Wednesday email me with when you'd like to go. I know it's the week before finals and most of you are busy. So I'm going to be a bit flexible on my scheduling. I'll leave at either 6:30, 7:00 or 7:30 depending on when people want to go, and send out an email to those who respond to let them know when to show up.
What I need to know:
Do you want to climb on Wednesday?
What time would you like to climb?
Should this be a themed climb where we dress up like Christmas and have Christmas cookies?
What you need to do:
Show up when I say we leave.
Bring $10 for the climbing pass. And $1 for your driver.
Bring flexible climbing clothes. (possibly an outfit)
Bring money for Culver's if you feel like ice cream afterwards.
See you there!

Wednesday Climbing at Boulder's, The first Coming! 12/9

From: Morgan Leider
---------------------

Wednesday, 6:30pm You probably know the drill. If not, just show up and I'll teach you everything you need to know. Come partake in one of the only 3 real sports! Conquor your fear of heights! And strike an amazing pose for the camera! (There might even be belated birthday cookies for everyone if 12/6/89 shows up and I find out what she likes.)
-When/Where: 6:30pm, Park Street Circle, Wednesday the 9th of December
-What do I need?: $10 for the day pass, $1 gas for your driver, and money for ice cream if you want some on the way home.
-What should I wear?: Jogging or yoga pants work well. I'd recommend against short baggy shorts. Basically something flexible that breathes.
-Gear?: The club has all the gear you should need. So you don't need to rent anything.
If you have any questions just drop me a call or an email!

Adventure Rock Trip November 25 2009

From: Jon Wood, Climbing Chair
--------------------

Hey Everyone,

Want to break out of the norm of only going to Boulders Climbing Gym? I love Boulders as much as the next person, but variety is the spice of life and so I would like to spice things up. On Wednesday November 25 ( yes, the day before Thanksgiving Day) I will lead folks out to Adventure Rock Climbing Gym in Pewaukee, WI. They recently put up all new routes and everyone should come out and try them out. We will leave from PSC (Park Street Circle, Memorial Union) at 4:30pm; if you need gear please arrive at 4:15pm. Plan to bring $20-25 which will cover the cost of a day pass at Adventure Rock, the cost of gas (check with your driver on this), and, as always, a stop over at the Culvers right next door. Since the gym closes at 10:00pm, we should be back at PSC around 11:30pm.

I strongly encourage people to come. While a B1 rating is not required for this trip I strongly recommend it. If you have questions or concerns please feel free to email me and I will respond as soon as I can.

Thanks!

Jon Wood!

The Bash Cometh 11/21

From: Matt Kaufmann
-----------

Hoofers! Yes, The Bash Cometh sooner than you would expect. It is happening this Saturday evening! The event of November that everybody has been waiting for. The event that is the final push through the end of the Fall Semester. The event you do not want to miss out on because all the cool kids are doing it. The event that requires no previous experience and is open to your non-Hoofer friends who wish to still prove their coolness factor.

But you should not delay any longer and sign up at Tuesday's meeting! I know, I know... some of you can not come to the Tuesday meeting. I know, I know... some of you have commitment issues (don't we all?!) and are not ready to commit to an event that is happening this Saturday night regardless of river levels, barometric pressure, Hoofer ratings, wind direction and other weather factors, driver availability (the Wonder Wagon has us covered!), participant numbers,... or you are waiting for something better to come up and occupy your Saturday night. Let me just give it to you straight, you are a lost Hoofer if you do not come to The Bash happening this Saturday night. Bring yourself and a friend!

If you can not make it to the Hoofer meeting at 7pm Tuesday or if you have commitment issues, drop me an email to reserve your spot. So yes, day of show ups are welcome pretty much because you need to be at the event of November! Or be a trooper and commit to going to The Bash at Tuesday's meeting. If you do neither of the previous options, go back two spaces and lose your turn and then just show up Saturday night at 7:30pm in the Hoofer Lounge. Cost is $12 cash!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~
Here it is.... the day fast approaching. The Hoofer Outing Club will be taking over Boulders Climbing Gym on the evening of Saturday, November 21, 2009 for The Boulder Bash. This will be the event of November! And from now on, it shall be referred to as The Bash! This year's theme is Retro. Costumes are of course highly encouraged.
Who is invited?
-Climbing fools and climbing wannabes. Beginners are welcome! No experience required. If you are getting this email, you are invited. Your non-Hoofer friends are also invited and will then be convinced to join the club!
How much will the trip cost?
-The Bash will cost $12 (CASH, please!) which must be payed at the time of sign up.
How do you sign up for this event?
-Sign up will be in person AFTER the Tuesday evening Hoofer Outing Club meeting at 7pm in the Hoofer Lounge (the dates of the next meeting is 11/17). You must pay $12 CASH at this time. Sign up will also include signing your life away on a Boulders Climbing Gym waiver. [Exceptions to in-person sign up will be kept to an absolute minimum... ie, you are currently doing an internship in Brussels, Belgium and therefore can not make it to the meeting. Such an excuse will of course be permissible].
Here is what is going down...
We will be gathering at 7:30 pm on Saturday, 11/21 in the Hoofer Lounge and making sure all climbing fools are accounted for. Car rides will be arranged to the gym (this pretty much involves finding an open car seat and meeting some new people). If you are able to drive, park your car in Park Street Circle (PSC) with the flashers on. We should arrive at the gym at 8 pm. All necessary gear will be provided. Food will also be present in the form of a sandwich bar, various snacking items and beverages. You provide an awesome climbing attitude, a costume fitting to this year's theme of Retro. The first hour or so at the Gym will involve getting beginners on the ropes. People are also more than welcome to just Boulder. The rest of the evening will be spent having a good time! And the good time will have to end at the gym around 11:30ish.
The trip is open to the first [insert a somewhat arbitrary number here] people that sign up. No climbing experience is needed. You do not want to be left out! Sign up Tuesday!
It's gonna be epic.
Climbing, Wednesday, Boulder's Gym 11/16
From: Morgan Leider
-----------
You know the drill, and you've probably seen at least 50 of these emails from me before. Wednesday, 6:30pm, the first coming of rock climbers will meet at park street circle and head off to go climb some stuff! We will be carpooling from park street circle. If you get there late and there's a bunch of cars with flashing hazards and no people, hurry down to the lower office to find us.
Sorry, no Monday night climbing this week. (Although the regulars will all probably be there anyhow if you show up on your own.) If last week was any indication, you're all probably studying for mid-terms and doing projects before Thanksgiving anyhow. So it's time for me to get some swimming and a good wilderness jog in this Monday.
-Bring $10 for the gym pass.
-Club gear usage is free to club members so you don't have to rent any.
-Please be considerate and offer your driver $1 for gas, especially if they're another poor college student.
-Bring flexible clothes to climb in. I'd recommend against jeans.
-John Wood is now climbing like Craig without the tattoo. Beware!
For any questions, feel free to email or call me.
Kickoff for our new deal at Boulders!! Oct. 28
From: Ryan Schmudlach
------------
To anyone that's ever been interested in trying to climb:
Rumors have been spreading through our climbing leaders over the past couple of weeks and now I'm officially announcing that we have secured a new deal with Boulders climbing gym. On "Hoofer Wednesdays", all day climbing is $10!! This saves the average climbing trip $20-30 and means you can go to Boulders at whatever time is convenient!
Because this is in kind of a use it or lose it stage with Boulders, we need to convince them we're worth it. As such, we're launching Hoofer Wednesdays as a warm up to this year's Hoofer Boulder Bash with a huge climbing trip on Wednesday, Oct. 28. If you've ever even thought about trying to climb, this will be the day to do it. Also, you'll be the first to know about this year's Bash.
This is an extremely beginner friendly trip, climbing ratings will be earned, and if our last big climbing event was any indication, there will be so many new people, I'll think I'm in the wrong place again. Come alone or bring a friend, everyone will be introduced. Make it a special night with that special someone - Boulders was ranked as one of the best places to bring a date (something about getting tied up with ropes, being required to checkout your partner on every climb [for safety reasons], and the perfect positions to show off how really ridiculously good looking you are).
What to expect? Basic climbing instruction - you'll get on the climbing walls in 10 minutes for those that don't have ratings. You'll learn how to find routes, how to Boulder, and see how sexy a double backed figure 8 knot is. After that, we'll get to Culver's just before they lock the door. Pumpkin shakes are the bomb diggity.
Cars will be leaving at approximately 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm from PSC (watch for specific times to be announced by leaders). All gear is provided.
Questions? Concerns?
Email me.
Please take less than 2 minutes to fill out the climbing activity group's short quarterly survey. This survey is an important tool in monitoring participation and improvement within the climbing group and your help would be pretty amazing.
Climbing on Monday and Wednesday 10/14
From: Morgan Leider
-----------
Ever want to teeter on the edge of death and amazing, hanging out on a tiny rock ledge while looking out over the valley 500 feet below you and not feel afraid? Well it takes a while to get to that point, but if you want to get started you can come climbing with us at Boulders this Monday and Wednesday night and start building up those skills. Beginners are welcome, no experience necessary!
-Where/when? Meet at the Park Street Circle at 6:30pm on Monday and Wednesday nights.
-What should I wear? Bring something that breathes and is flexible. Nylon jogging pants work great. Shorts are fine as well.
-Do I need gear? No, the club has gear you can borrow. But feel free to bring your own as well!
-How much does it cost? Monday night will be $12 for the day pass, Wednesday is $10 for the day pass with HOC membership. Also, if you're really into climbing there's a hoofer climbing pass with unlimited climbing till the beginning of spring semester for about $144.
-How do we get there? We carpool from PSC. I've never run out of car spaces yet, so we should be fine there.
How do I sign-up? Email me with your name, cell#, and if you're bringing a car and how many it can hold.
See you there!
Camp/Climb Devil's Lake
From: Niki Exterovich
----------
What
: A chilly 24 hours at Devil's lake to camp and climb!
When: Leave from Park Street Circle on Friday, October 9 at 6:00pm - Return to PSC by 4:00pm on Saturday, October 10
Where: Devil's Lake State Park (an hour north of Madison)
Who: Anyone fierce enough to brave a cold night of camping and who wants to go climb some stuff (beginners welcome!)
Cost: $10 (this includes the campsite fee, food for breakfast and lunch on Saturday plus marshmallows, and fuel for the drivers) to be given to me or your driver before you leave Madison!
Why: Ever had your morning coffee while watching the sunrise above the Wisconsin River valley when the leaves are turning? You'll also learn how to say "That's what she said" in French!
Camping: It will be COLD this weekend! The overnight low for Friday is 31F! I'll bring enough tents for everyone and try to grab as many sleeping pads as possible, but make sure you have a warm sleeping bag or bring lots of blankets! We're just car camping, so pack heavy!
Food: Trip cost will pay for breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Things you may want to bring on your own: money for dinner on Friday night or snack for later, something to drink on Friday night (but remember we're getting up around 4am and we have advanced wake-up tactics), and hot drink mix/tea for in the morning.
Climbing: All climbing levels are welcome but if we run low on space, preference will be given to those who are belay certified. Again, dress warm: its a high of 43F on Saturday! I'll already be near the lake on Friday, so I won't be able to open the cage for gear. If you need club gear, please respond to this email before Thursday at 11:00pm with your shoe size and harness size (regular or large) so I can grab gear for you.
Please respond to this email if you're interested in going or call me (even if you've already told me you're going), do NOT just show up at PSC. If you have any questions please ask! My number is 608-669-4227. - Niki
Climbing Tonight!
From: Niki Exterovich
---------
Hi climbers (and aspiring climbers)! I know Morgan will be heading out to Boulders Climbing Gym tonight but I thought we could cause double the trouble so I'll announce it too!
It's the usual: we'll leave from Park Street Circle tonight (Thursday, October 1) at 7:30pm, head to Boulders, climb til 10:00pm, then head home, back to PSC by 10:30. If you need club gear, meet me at 7:20 in the Hoofer lower office! Bring $12 to climb and $1 for your driver!
Please respond to this email if you'll be attending and say if you have 1) a car or 2) your own gear. Please don't hesitate to call me if you have a question or are coming with but running late! 608-669-4227.
Chance of Disney sing-a-longs: 70%
Chance of my continued awkward bouldering attempts: 80%
Chance of Twilight themed chocolates: 10%
Chance of us being cooler than the Twilight references would indicate: 95%
Actually I was planning on gathering at 6:30pm for climbing as usual. (for me at least) But if we want to have 2 groups going out at different times that works as well! :) I'll be at Park Street circle at 6:30pm for anyone who wants to leave a bit earlier and get an extra hour or so of climbing in, and to train people what they need to know to climb.
See you soon!
