canoeing sunday 11AM

weather forecast is for 5 to 10 mph S winds for Sunday, sunny high 49.
under such good conditions,i would like to lead a short canoe lake mendota trip this sunday starting at 11 AM and returnng by 12:30. meet at boathouse
considering the very cold water, i would require each boater to fit their pfd securely. we would stay close together and within 200 ft of shore so in the unlikely case of upset, we would be right by shore
canoers would have to have had a lake lesson, and at least one person in each boat must have had river experience. kayakers would need a sk1 or R2 plus wet suit and jacket
email me if you want to come

Calling for Hoofer of the Month Nominations! For Council HOTM and Outing HOTM

From: Caroline Rose, Outing Club Representative to Hoofer Council
---------------------

October is drawing to a close, so it's time to look back on the last few weeks and think about Hoofer of the Month...

Hoofer of the Month is an award given to a Hoofer member who has gone above and beyond what the club has asked of him/her, shown great dedication, and should be recognized for their contribution. The outing club exec. board votes for a Hoofer of the Month within the Outing Club, but you may be unaware of the fact that Hoofer Council (the governing body for all six Hoofer clubs) votes for a Hoofer of the month as well.

With that in mind, if you think there is someone in Hoofers who deserves this award, send us a nomination! Send a brief paragraph explaining why a certain person is deserving of this recognition, and the nominations will be considered at the next meeting...

Nominations to Hoofer Council may be sent to:
me (Caroline Rose, Outing Club's representative to Hoofer Council) cmrose@wisc.edu
or Paul Davidsaver (Hoofer President) president@hoofers.org

Mary, our president, (outingpresident@gmail.com) would be happy to accept nominations for the Outing Club Hoofer of the Month.

Thanks!

Saturday Night Camping/Hiking/Fishing

From: Morgan Leider
-----------------

I'm not sure how many people are going to be left with the Halloween backpacking trip going on and various other partying. But if anyone is still around and up for some fun I"ll lead a camping trip to either Devil's Lake, the Kettle Moraine, or Lake Michigan. Where we go depends on what people want to do. If enough people want to go fishing I can get a 17 foot boat and we can go out on the big lake. Otherwise the Kettle Moraine has well over a hundred miles of trails and Mothy Lake if anyone is up for fishing, and there's Devil's Lake as well. THERE WILL BE PUDGIE PIES!
Costs? $12-15 for the campsite divided by how many go. And expect $2-5 for gas. Plus whatever we get for food. I already have firewood and starter to get the fire going if it's wet, so no need to buy more of that. So likely $10 or less.
Time? Saturday afternoon. TBD Preferably after your hangovers are gone from Friday night and you've all taken showers.
What you need?
1. A sleeping bag rated to at least 30F, but 20F would be better.
2. A sleeping pad as I'm guessing the backpacking trip will be stealing them all.
3. Warm clothes.
4. Fork/Knife/Spoon and a bowl and cup.
5. A fishing pole if you're interested in fishing. And a fishing license.
6. And earplugs are highly recommended if you're a light sleeper as there always seems to be at least 1 heavy snorer.
7. If you're up for an early morning or late evening jog, I'll likely be doing a good 8 miles at some point. So some running shoes would be in order.
I should have everything else we need.
If you're interested send me an email and we'll work out the logistics.

Cave surveying trip to Mystery cave?

From: Houssam Nassif, Vertical Climbing Chair
--------------------

Hello cavers

checking if someone would be interested in a surveying trip to Mystery cave.
If you are interested, plz reply back so we can plan a trip

Mystery is a large cave in Southern Minnesota.
Surveying is the process of drawing a map of the cave, it involves drawing sketches and taking measurements. It is a fun process that will teach you a lot about caves and caving. And will give you a whole new look and feel about caving. You will start looking at caves from a different angle.

Beginners are welcome, but this should NOT be your first caving trip. One (preferably more) prior caving trips are mandatory.
We will split into a few surveying parties, according to the skill levels of the cavers. Areas available range from easy to very challenging.
If there are any who desire narrow, sheer walled, terror laden challenges, we've got some of those available too.

We should leave madison saturday Nov 7th, early morning (6:30?)
We will cave all day, and sleep probably at Warren's house (bring a sleeping bag and a mat)

We will drive back to Madison Sunday morning.

Mounting Marcy, Lake Placid, and the Niagara Falls

From: Ryan Schmudlach
---------

Ladies and Gentlehoofers,

Mark your calendars for Dec. 3-6 as we make our 3rd and likely final annual attempt to mount Marcy. Having only conquered Mt. Phelps and gotten within eye sight of Marcy's final summit, this year is the year; after all, third time's a charm.

To give you an idea of what you're getting into, this is basically a weekend trip to the Appalachian Mountains in New York with a detour through Canadia and Niagara Falls and crap loads of snow which makes for a pretty surreal climb. This is the third annual trip and the last two years have been amazing; easily in the top five trips I've ever done.

The goal this year is to rectify our failed attempts at mounting Marcy, the highest point in New York State. And also, finally figure out how to get through Canada unscathed (the first time they wouldn't let us in resulting in a circumnavigation of the great lakes, the second time they wouldn't let us out resulting in 7 hours of snowball fights and surviving on Wasa crackers on the Canadian highway system).

Other distractions along the way: Lake Placid was home to the 1932 and 1980 winter olympics (remember Miracle? That was here). This means Lake Placid has a bobsled track....that you can go bobsledding on. Currently 10 people are on the Hoofer Bobsled team (and we have t-shirts to prove it). The cabins we stay in have a sauna. Saunas are sweet. There's also lots of snow. Saunas plus snow are even sweeter. What I'm trying to get at is that you can join the Hoofer 200 club.

Details: Cost will be $150 (with a refund of up to $30 likely) for the essentials (gas, cabins, beverages, 4am gas station map purchase).
Lake Placid is pretty awesome, by far one of my favorite towns. Go to http://www.new.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2497781&id=8607798&l=919d1d3596 to see pictures from last year. We stay in this cabin http://www.cobblemountainlodge.com/cabins2/5.htm and cram up to 12 people into it.

We'll leave Madison at 6pm on Thursday, December 3rd and arrive back in Madison sometime Monday morning (roughly 6am). The detailed itinerary is below. All you need to bring is warm clothes for hiking and a sleeping bag if you're on the floor. Questionable goods will be acquired AFTER crossing borders. Departure times, Canadian detours and the like are all subject to adjustment if they cause issues, just make them known.

Currently there are 10 spots with an option to go to 12 pending vehicular transportation.

If you're seriously interested and ready to put down your $50 deposit if selected, email
schmudlach@wisc.edu with answers to the following questions to be considered. Those deemed worthy based on your answers below or my first hand knowledge of you will be notified in approximately 1 week if you've got a space. Hint: make me giggle. Believe the two people who went last year that later told me they were almost too intimidated to go. "I'm so happy I went, I have no idea why I thought everyone would be so hardcore, everybody was awesome."

1. Are you a current Hoofer member?
2. Are you reliably available from 6pm Thursday to 6am Monday on the weekend of December 3-6?
3. What's your degree? (Bonus given to most obscure)
4. What is your all time life goal?
5. What is one of the things you would put on your “bucket” list?
6. Do you like waterfalls, mountains, glaciers, and all that is pretty?
7. What is the weirdest job you've ever had?
8. Can you poop in the woods, even if the toilet paper is frozen?
9. Do you like riding in the bitch seat of a sub-compact car for 1000 miles while "We Built this City" and swedish techno play on repeat?
9a. Do you have a car with good MPGs that would be willing to make the trip?
10. If you had a yacht, what would you name it?
11. How do you realistically feel about hiking/climbing 14 miles with 4,000 feet elevation change at the crack of dawn while it is snowing and cold?
12. Are you allowed in Canada?
13. Will you be allowed back into the United States?
14. Do you have a passport?
15. What word would you add to the dictionary if you could, what would it mean?
**Extra Credit**: Can you give me a reason that makes you worthy no matter how you answered the previous questions?

Itinerary looks like this:

Thursday (12/3) :
leave Madison ~6:00pm

Friday (12/4) :
~9:00am - see Niagara Falls, stay 10 minutes. ~9:10am - Drive the rest of the way to New York

Kayak lake lesson this Sunday

From: Ned Rubert
-------------

I am teaching a Kayak Lake Lesson at the Pool Session this Sunday (11/1); this lesson earns you your Lake Rating in a whitewater kayak and is the prerequisite for the Sea Kayak Skills Lesson (SK0). Meet at the boathouse at 12 noon instead of 1 PM so we can review the ground-based part of the lesson and choose boats before taking them to the pool. To sign up for this lesson, please e-mail me (kfrubert@wisc.edu) *and* purchase a Pool Session ticket ($5) from Hoofers at the Outdoor Programs Office. When you show up on Sunday, please remember to bring a change of dry clothes, a swimsuit and a towel. Noseplugs, a warm-when-wet top such as a hydroskin and a lock for your gym locker are highly recommended.

Nathan Edwards: September 2009 Hoofer of the Month!

Nathan Edwards: the Man, the Legend, the Hoofer of the Month, September 2009.

I am pleased to announce that the September 2009 Hoofer of the Month award goes to Nathan Edwards, a relatively new member who has proved himself to be not only an amiable trip participant, but also a skilled handyman! After our Door County Labor Day trip, he noticed that a few of our stoves could use tweaking and took the initiative to repair the Outing Club's entire collection of camp stoves. This is no small task; Nathan volunteered many hours of his time to get our stoves in tip top shape. Not only is he adept at fixing gear, but his good-natured, patient disposition and generous spirit makes him a model Hoofer. In other words, I'd adventure with Nathan any day. The Outing Club is lucky to have him in our ranks.

Congratulations, Nathan! You've earned it.

HOTM background

FACT: Hoofer Outing Club is run almost solely by volunteers. Members donate their time and energy to leading trips, lessons, and maintaining our club gear---motivated not by monetary compensation but instead by love for an activity, commitment to the club, and a sense of community with their fellow Hoofers. This aspect of the club speaks to the character of our leaders and to the overall culture of our organization. The Outing Club is fortunate to have a plethora of incredible leaders, and recognizing them is important to the Executive Board. That's why every month the Outing Club honors one member who has gone above and beyond his or her responsibilities to the club by leading trips and lessons, helping maintain gear, or just for being generally outstanding.

HALLOWEEN-BOATING - Sat 10.30am

From: Stephan Eilbracht (first announcement, woo!)
----------------------

Hey Hoofers, hey Paddlers,

LET’S GO HALLOWEEN-BOATING!!!

You didn’t get in for the epic Sporkies-trip?
You wanna do something exciting before getting wasted?
You have no other plans for the afternoon?

Then listen… this is the perfect idea - let’s do something fun!!!

The weather forecast for this Saturday, 31st of October, seems to be alright – overcast and temperatures somewhere in the forties.
And as the outdoor paddling season is slowly coming to an end, paddling is moving indoors to the pools and people start wishfully waiting for the spring boating season, let’s go one last time to SAC.
This is a great chance for all of you guys who wanna say goodbye to the river that provided so much fun during this summer or for those who simply wanna paddle together with me one last time :)

We gonna meet at PSC on Saturday at 10.30am, get our gear ready and aim to be on the river at around noon. Depending on the weather and our mood and enthusiasm we will stay on the river for two to three hours and try to be back in Madison not later then 5pm. Thus you will have plenty of time to get ready for freakfest or whatever plans you have…

Yeah, right… you ARE excited – I know.

So if this sounds cool to you send me an email (eilbracht@wisc.edu); include your name, your rating, telephone number, if you have a car and would be willing to drive/carry boats (I definitely need at least one person to drive as I don’t have a car) and what cold weather gear you have.

To go on this trip you need at least the kayak lake rating, a wetsuit (there are some in the inner cage), some kind of drytop, splashjacket or rainjacket and multiple warm when wet layers (polypro, wool, fleece) to wear under your wetsuit. Also, if you think you’re good pack at least one extra layer in addition. And don’t forget you need a set of dry clothes to change as soon as you get off of the river. For those who are afraid of being too cold, there is the option to rent drysuits from Rutabaga ($35 a day).
The cost for the trip will be around $5 to pay for the drivers.

See you soon,

Stephan

PS: I didn’t forget… IT’S HALLOWEEN. So feel free to bring your costume! There will be time for a unique and crazy photoshoot in your boats before we launch.
Also, if there is interest we can meet at my place before the trip, carve some pumpkins, take them and a few candles with us and make a halloweeny shoreline at SAC. And when we get back from SAC we skip Culvers and have pumpkin soup. Sounds delicious?!

Water Safety Board meeting

Hi everyone

Let's plan to have a fall Water Safety Board meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 10th following the HOC meeting. I'll try to get a quiet location for us to meet and will post that on email once I know the details.

If you have individuals up for leader ratings, please forward those to me.

Thanks.

'll be leading climbing trips to Boulder's Gym on both Monday and Wednesday nights. Gathering time will be 6:30pm for both of the trips at Park Street Circle. Bring breathable clothes to climb in, $12 for the day pass on Monday, or $10 on Wednesday, and it's good to bring $1 to offer your driver for gas.
The Monday night trip will be packing up to come back at 9pm so I can make it to lake jumping. The Wednesday trip will return at 10pm as usual and probably involve a trip to Culvers.
Beginners are welcome!

Kickoff for our new deal at Boulders!! Oct. 28

From: Ryan Schmudlach
------------

To anyone that's ever been interested in trying to climb:

Rumors have been spreading through our climbing leaders over the past couple of weeks and now I'm officially announcing that we have secured a new deal with Boulders climbing gym. On "Hoofer Wednesdays", all day climbing is $10!! This saves the average climbing trip $20-30 and means you can go to Boulders at whatever time is convenient!

Because this is in kind of a use it or lose it stage with Boulders, we need to convince them we're worth it. As such, we're launching Hoofer Wednesdays as a warm up to this year's Hoofer Boulder Bash with a huge climbing trip on Wednesday, Oct. 28. If you've ever even thought about trying to climb, this will be the day to do it. Also, you'll be the first to know about this year's Bash.

This is an extremely beginner friendly trip, climbing ratings will be earned, and if our last big climbing event was any indication, there will be so many new people, I'll think I'm in the wrong place again. Come alone or bring a friend, everyone will be introduced. Make it a special night with that special someone - Boulders was ranked as one of the best places to bring a date (something about getting tied up with ropes, being required to checkout your partner on every climb [for safety reasons], and the perfect positions to show off how really ridiculously good looking you are).

What to expect? Basic climbing instruction - you'll get on the climbing walls in 10 minutes for those that don't have ratings. You'll learn how to find routes, how to Boulder, and see how sexy a double backed figure 8 knot is. After that, we'll get to Culver's just before they lock the door. Pumpkin shakes are the bomb diggity.

Cars will be leaving at approximately 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm from PSC (watch for specific times to be announced by leaders). All gear is provided.

Questions? Concerns?
Email me.

BOOD trip after next week's meeting

From: Richard Miller

------------------

Here's an invitation to go for BOOD (Beverages and fOOD) at The Brink Lounge after next week's meeting. Especially because my band will be taping on the Mad Toast Live! Podcast & Radio Show. We’ll be featuring some songs appropriate to Halloween for this special show.

The Brink Lounge - 701 E. Washington Ave (below the High Noon Saloon)

Tuesday Oct 27th - 8pm: Ken Lonnquist, 9pm: Water Street Bridge - $5 cover (optional but suggested)

What was born as the illegitimate brain child of Jon Baade and James Kuehl, Water Street Bridge has now turned into a fully grown bastard child of inane proportions. Realizing early on that enough is never enough, these two veterans of stage and studio teamed up with Michi Regier, on fiddle, and Richard Miller, on drums and percussion. Together they blend Celtic, blues, Americana, shanty, jazz, Creole, folk, art rock, reggae, Balkan beats, Slavic dance grooves, comedy and original songs into something that can only be described as “eclectic acoustic.”

Brandishing an impressive arsenal of musical instruments (including guitar, resonator guitar, mandolin, ukulele, fiddle, viola, pennywhistle, squeeze box, harmonica, doumbek, agogo, guiro, tupan and bodhran - just to name a few) they bring new life to tales of old, old sounds to tales of today and twisted takes on tales never meant to be told.

Hope to see you there,

Richard

Up North Paddling this Sunday

From: Ned Rubert
-----------

I am thinking about doing a paddling trip up north this Sunday (10/25). As for the schedule, we would meet at Park St. Circle at 7 AM and be returning by 9 or 10 PM. I have approval to lead R3s on Wolf Section IV if I can get a hold of Ralph. I am also willing to run Wolf Section III or the Pesh instead so that R3ps can come and so we can keep costs down (pending Water Safety approval). Dry top + wet suit combo will be the minimum required gear, and a dry suit is strongly recommended if you don't have a solid roll; a dry suit may also be required for R3ps on Section III or the Pesh if water levels come up a lot on these rivers (>600 cfs or 12 in, respectively). E-mail with your name, number, rating and paddling preference before Friday evening if interested so that I can make plans. Cost will be ~$65 if we run Section IV (because the run itself costs $35); if we run the Wolf Section III or Pesh, you can expect to spend ~$30 between gas and food.

Pier Out! Sunday, 1:00PM. Be there.

From: Evan Schroeder
----------

Yo Everybody,

This coming Sunday, the 20th of October, we are doing the final lift out of the pier. It is gonna be super fun, the weather will be better than we could ever ask for...as in there will be a South wind...which means it will be warm, and there will be no waves. Afterward, there is discussion of trips out on the lake. I'm hoping we can finish in about 2 hours, which is totally doable if I get 4-6 people to come out.

All you new members! Get out and help support your club. It'll make you feel good inside.

Old members, you should come out because you already know how good inside it feels to help out the club.

So, I NEED to know if you can come. At least a rough estimate. Oh yeah, one word, pizza.

Wear work clothes, you're gonna be picking up wet boards and rusty beams. But don't worry, no one needs to get in the water.

Thanks in advance,

Evan

Reannouncement: Trail Building this Weekend!

From: Matt Kaufmann
----------

Saturday! Saturday! Saturday!

Ice Age Trail: trail construction

Date and time: Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 8:25 AM until 4:30 PM
Location: Andersen Preserve in Cross Plains, WI
Contact: Matt "Navs" Kaufmann
Description:
Continuing on with the tradition of Hoofers volunteering their time in order to create a fine hiking trail for public enjoyment, another trail construction day is scheduled in Cross Plains! The location of this event is the same place many Hoofers built trail back in mid-July and also again in early-October. This section of Ice Age Trail will prove to be more than worthwhile.

Hoofers are needed for volunteer work along the Ice Age Trail just outside of Cross Plains! On Saturday, October 24, let's build trail and further complete the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. The main convoy will leave Park Street Circle (PSC) at 8:30 No trail construction experience is needed. There is a short learning curve! Many hands make little work.

Who: Hoofers, friends of Hoofers, Hoofer friends' friends, imaginary friends are not welcome, significant others, younger cousins, older cousins, big brothers, little sisters, your twin, everyone and their mom

What: Trail construction

Where: Ice Age Trail off of Lewis St. in Cross Plains. Cross Plains is a 30 minute drive west of Madison.

When: On Saturday, October 24 meet at PSC at 8:25am! Depart shortly thereafter at 8:30.00 and arrive at the trailhead ready for work at 9am. Work until the afternoon hours and then possibly stop for a late lunch/early dinner in Cross Plains. Be back in Madison by mid/late-afternoon/early evening. We'll shoot for being back in Madison by atleast 4:30pm.

Why: The completion of this hiking loop depends on volunteers like YOU!

Dress for the weather. We will go out in most weather conditions (already braved temperatures ranging from 20 to 92 degrees this past year and also snow and rain). Layers are always good.
Dress to get dirty. Clothes you would wear while gardening work great. Dress to do work. Leather work gloves are a must along with sturdy footwear (ie, hiking boots).
Bring plenty of water (seriously, 2 liters is recommended) and some snacks and definitely a lunch if you plan on building trail for most of the day.
Bring some gas $. Cost of gas should be minimal and will be negotiated with passengers.

If the group wants, a late lunch/early dinner in Cross Plains is definitely possible.

Sign up by email and/or talk to me at the Tuesday meeting if you want more info.

Questions, concerns, problems, or if you just need to talk...
Email me at mkaufmann@wisc.edu or call (262)689-8811

Lake is below 55 F

From Kris Stepenuck
-------

Hi everyone

Not that you haven't noticed the cold days we've been having, but Lake Mendota has. So, the water is down to 53.2 degrees F. That means to please use extra caution if you're a leader for boating trips on the lake, and to follow cold weather precautions/regulations for all boating activities. See the outer cage for stipulated regs. (I'll flip to to cold weather side of the chart tomorrow.)

Cheers,

Kris

Kickapoo River paddling trip this weekend

From: Connie Lane connieenal@yahoo.com

---------------------------

The weekend weather should be better (warmer and drier) than the weather we've been having, and the fall colors in southern Wisconsin should be optimal.

I am thinking of leading a small paddling trip on the upper Kickapoo River, using either canoes or sea kayaks. To paddle a canoe, you must have taken a lake lesson. To paddle a sea kayak, paddlers must have an SK1 rating. Sea kayakers must wear wetsuits (the club has some) and waterproof jackets, canoeists must wear a water resistant jacket.

This could either be a day trip (Saturday or Sunday), or preferably an overnight trip, camping along the river midway Saturday night. Campsites on the river are small, so an overnight trip would be limited to six.

Cost for an overnight trip (including transportation, food and permits) would be about $40. We would leave Saturday morning and return late Sunday afternoon. A day trip would be less, around $25. I will collect money at the PSC when we leave and refund leftover money after the trip.

If you are interested in paddling the Kickapoo, please e-mail me by Friday, 16 October at 3 pm. Tell me whether you want a day trip (and which day you prefer) or an overnight trip, and whether you want to paddle a sea kayak or a canoe.

Lake Jumping: Are you INSANE!?!?!? Don't worry you're NOT ALONE!

From: Morgan Leider tyrantsilkey@gmail.com
---------

LAKE JUMPING, FRIDAY, CREW DOCKS, 7 PM!
Did you know that In ancient times, when man would fight polar bears barehanded in order to prove themselves, they would jump into icy cold water in preparation in order to numb their pain, tighten their skin to make them look more freicious, and get the adrenaline they needed to win? It's also known that in ancient times women would perform a ritual where they would dive into the icy depths because they believed that by embracing the cold sooner rather than later, the fates would give them a warmer year ahead where it didn't start to snow in October already! So COME, embrace your ancient heritage, and help stave off October snows next year!!!!
Well nobody has taken up the flag yet for the Monday night lake jumps, and unless I change my climbing schedule that won't work for me anyhow. So if you're insane, have a swimsuit, a towel, and a hankering for some flash-cold-induced adrenaline rushes then come on down to the crew docks for some lake jumping!
Where: Crew docks. It's those 2 big piers on Mendota behind the boat house next to the dorms. If you're at Memorial Union facing the lake just take a left and walk down the lakeshore trail and you'll be there after about a quarter mile or so.
When: I'm thinking 7pm would be best for a Friday so that people will have time to go off and do whatever it is they do on Friday nights afterwards. If people would prefer it at the traditional 9:45 that works too, but I'm going to assume you're all going to want to be partying (ie: trailbuilding and hiking :D) by then.
How do we warm up? When you get out of the water, you immediately dry off with a towel. Then when we're all done we head on into one of the dorms to chat and have hot chocolate.
If nobody shows up, no problem, I'll probably just change my climbing schedule and do it at the traditional time on Mondays at 9:45 PM instead.

canoe trip Sunday 11AM

From: Carl Zimm
----------

i would like to lead a quietwater river trip on Sunday, meeting at Park St Circle at 11am, and boating the Maunasha river, putting in at Langer Park in Marshall (30 km E of Madison), and paddling upstream, then back down. Plan is for a 3 hour paddle, and return circa 6PM. I require a lake rating in canoe, or a R1 or SK0 in kayak. Canoers would need warm clothes plus extra clothes in a waterproof bag; kayakers would need a wet suit and paddle jacket. Weather is predicted to be sunny, mild wind, high in low 50s. Vegetation should be various shades of gold, and copper. Email reply to me with boat rating, and whether you can transport boats.

Whitewater SAC Trip Saturday (10/17)

From: Ned Rubert
----------

Pending approval of our Water Safety Chair, I will lead a SAC trip on Saturday (10/17). Meet at Park St. Circle at 12 PM; plan on being back between 4 and 5 PM after a quick bite to eat in Sauk City/Prairie du Sac. Bring $10-15 for food+gas for your driver. Due to the colder temperatures predicted for Saturday, a minimum of a wet suit and paddling jacket is required. This trip will be open to those with a R3p kayak rating or higher, and *may* be open to a limited number of R1s and R2s, as well as R1-OCs provided they have at minumum a 3 mm wetsuit and dry top (dry pants also necessary if canoeing). (For those who are curious about the departure/return times, they were selected based on the Badger football game, which starts at 11 AM and is anticipated to conclude between 2 and 3 PM. That being said, please make sure someone stays with your car at all times when loading at Park St. Circle, because the police like to ticket on football game days!)

Since we don't currently have a working web site, please e-mail me (kfrubert@wisc.edu) if you wish to participate in the SAC trip on Saturday 10/17, and whether you can drive/haul boats.

Thanks,

-Ned

Ice Age Trail Hiking and Gibraltar Rock

Hi,
I am leading a day hike on Sunday. We will hike a short loop around the Lodi Marsh and then go to the Gibraltar Rock. You will emerse in beautiful autum colors, sounds, and smells. We will also drive through rolling hills and see fields with varying textures and colors. Fall is a very rich season for your senses!
Meet at 8:30am on Sunday at Park Street Circle
Bring water and snacks, we will stop at a cafe in Lodi for some brunch/ early lunch, then we will head to the Gibraltar Rock, which is not too far from Lodi. I haven't been there. But people told me it is a very nice look out. It's a short and fairly steep hike to the top of the rock.
We will be back around 2:00-3:00pm.
Please dress in layers and wear comfy shoes. The weather is supposed to be nice, so hopefully we will see beautiful colors.

Backpacking this 10/17 Weekend!

From: Christa Seidl
---------

Anyone interested in backpacking this weekend? Well I sure am, and I have a few people who are too. If you wanna be one of those people, shoot me an email or come to our meeting, tomorrow at 6 pm in the Hoofer lounge.

No experience in backpacking necessary, probably going to be a beginner friendly trip to Kettle Moraine, covering 6-9 miles a day.

Why should you come? Because it is going to be sunny and warm all weekend and the colors are going to be spectacular over the hills! Also, jiffy pop, ridiculous clothing, music and shenanigans will most likely ensue.

Plan: Come to the meeting tomorrow to find out, otherwise I will keep you posted through emails!

Happy Trails,

Porkies Backpacking 10/23-10/25

From: Mary Collins
------------
Let's go backpacking!

The weekend of October 23-25, I will lead a group up to the Porcupine Mountains in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for a quick backpacking weekend. http://www.exploringthenorth.com/porkiesum/summer.html The trip will leave Friday morning (Oct 23) from Park Street Circle and return to campus Sunday night (Oct 25). No backpacking experience required; beginners welcome. As Ryan Schmudlach said in his Sporkies announcement (http://hooferoutingclub.blogspot.com/2009/10/spookysporkporkiessporkies-2009.html), the Porkies are a gem of Midwestern backpacking....the 60,000 acre wilderness area is a sanctuary for hikers who seek the solitude and quiet (or lack thereof) of deep woods and who delight in observing millions of years of dramatic geomorphology from the door of their tent. The 35,000 acres of unlogged old-growth forest within the park is the largest such expanse between the Appalachian mountains and the Rockies. You have to see these giant trees for yourself in order to truly appreciate their immensity. Also, there's a je ne sais quois about being up north that shouldn't be overlooked.

This is a great first trip for beginners and a fun trip for experienced 'packers. We'll sleep at a lake one night (possibly Superior, possibly small, secluded Mirror Lake. Both offer potentially refreshing [read: freezing!] swimming experiences). Hiking mileage for the weekend will be ~15-20 miles. Temperatures will range from the high 40s to low 30s. You need a 20 degree rated sleeping bag (at least; a sleeping bag liner couldn't hurt), hiking boots, and non-cotton clothing (synthetic material, wool). The club will provide backpacks, stoves, tents, sleeping pads, water filters, and food. Cost will be $60 per person for non-drivers, less for drivers. If interested, please email me at mcoll628@gmail.com. In your email, please indicate whether or not you have a car and can drive, if you have ever been backpacking before, and any food allergies/preferences.

The size of the trip will depend on the number of car seats available, but I will set a limit at 10 people. There will be a waiting list. Email me with any questions.

Curling!

From: Jon Gero
---------

Hey Hoofers,

Are any of you interested in curling? I've been fascinated by the sport for some time now since it's so silly, and it's the only Olympic sport where drinking is part of the rules. Seriously, all curling matches involve drinking beer afterward! Anyhow, the Madison Curling Club (http://www.madisoncurlingclub.com/) has a league starting up soon that's really fun and totally beginner friendly. They're having some open houses during the next week, where you can learn more about the club, curling and their beer selection. Give me a shout it you're interested, and we can check out one of the open houses.

Cheers,
Jon

Spooky+Spork+Porkies=Sporkies 2009!!

From: Ryan Schmudlach
-------------

Halloween in Madison can be kind-a lame and usually doesn't involve scary things except stepping in vomit and getting pepper sprayed or kicked by a police horse or waking up the next morning on a random couch next to Spiderman.

So how about something much more authentically spooky? Something like.....backpacking under a freshly waxing moon in the wilderness of the Porcupine Mountains of the UP on the shores of Lake Superior while the spirits and goblins and poltergeists entertain us with their tricks and treats. And if that isn't scary enough, you'll experience first hand where the original "sporking" occurred.

The Porkies are a gem of Midwestern backpacking and are a designated state wilderness area; though not mountains by any worldly standard, they offer some challenging climbs, panoramic views, and scenic/remote trails in and along the Lake Superior Shoreline.

To get an idea of what to expect, check out http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=40232461&l=6000b43a68&id=8607798 and/or http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2471465&id=8607798&l=90fdfb8174

We'll leave Madison THURSDAY evening, October 29th, head up to Lake Superior, stop for dinner near-but-not-in Tomahawk, and arrive in the porkies around 11pm, and car camp.

FRIDAY, we will wear our costumes and frolic through the woods, eventually camping on the shores of Lake Superior, where we will celebrate with a gargantuan (an understatement) campfire, eat some spooky burritos, drink hot apple/whiskey cider, Jiffy Pop popcorn it up, and carve jack-o-lanterns, which means we will also roast pumpkin seeds over the campfire, and do other things that will scare us like midnight swimming or ghost stories (I'll bring a book) or chasing yeti's.

SATURDAY, we will hike to an epic campsite along Lake Superior, go moonlight swimming for those who dare, eat some spaghetti goodness, and perform more shenanigans around a campfire, assuming there still exists firewood (last year was ridiculous, so was the year before).

Sunday, we'll pack back to our cars, then go to the Korner Kitchen in Wakefield where all the calories we burned will be replaced with the famous LOGGERS OMELETTE which has eggs, cheese, hashbrowns, and about 3 cows worth of meat (only 2 Hoofers have ever finished it). We'll then zip back to Madison in time for 6pm or so.

Total hiking mileage will be 25-30 miles, beginners welcome, though it will be cold.

Cost will be ~$60. All food except snacks will be provided.

You must bring your own sleeping bag (at lest 20F or colder, liner recommended as it will be cold (below freezing and snow possible), as well as warm (no cotton) clothing, raingear, good boots, a Halloween costume, and a pumpkin.

Open to 10-12 people --- those with cars and Halloween costumes will be prioritized.

Email schmudlach@wisc.edu to get on the interested list. Mention important details like your car and something interesting about yourself.

Ring game this Saturday

From: Bogdan Dzyubak
------------

There is a Ring game at the Governor Dodge State park. If you are not familiar, it is a massive (about 100 people) scale capture the flag game. People dress up in costumes, preferentially related to Lord of the Rings them but almost anything will pass, and run around the park all day capturing flags, trying to get the ring to Mt Doom and otherwise having fun. The game is free to play and even a simple costume will do (though you will get more character points for better costumes, including metal weapons and such).

Date: Saturday!
Location: 4175 State Road 23, Dodgeville, WI 53533 is the park entrance. Further directions coming soon
Contact: Me for now
Price: Only gas money, so around $5-10 depending on the number of people per car.
On this note, drivers are especially welcome. If you know someone with a car - please invite them. So far, I am trying to work out a ride but can not guarantee one.

Note: Dress for the weather - it may be very cold, you will be traversing odd kinds of terrain, and possibly rolling in the mud (just kidding - unless you want to). You may want to bring lunch. The game ends at 5:30 and we can go get some food then, as well.

Cheers,
Hope to hear from a good many of you

Trail Building! 10/24/09

From: Matt Kaufmann

Sign up by email and/or talk to me at the Tuesday meeting.

Questions, concerns, problems, or if you just need to talk...

Open Hoofer Council Leadership Positions!

From: Paul Davidsaver, Hoofer Council President
------------------

Greetings Hoofers,

I wanted to let everyone know about some exciting open positions on Hoofers Council. As you may know, Hoofer Council is the overall governing board for all of the Hoofer clubs, in addition to facilitating and planning our own events. We are approaching some exciting time as plans for the New Union South, including our climbing wall, are nearing completion, and preparations for the Historic Renovation of Hoofers Wing in MU are about to begin.

Hoofer Council needs to fill two important positions to aid in these endeavors. We have a vacancy for our Vice President of Administration, and our newly created Renovation Chair. The VP-Admin is a Council Executive and is involved in many important decisions and functions of the organization. The new Renovation Chair will work closely with the VP-Admin in helping to coordinate and plan for the renovation of the Hoofer space in the Union Renovation Project.

Both of these positions offer a huge leadership development opportunity and the chance to work with other important Union student and nonstudent leaders. Given the importance of these positions, we have decided to open applications to both Hoofers and Hoofer-recommend people through next Wednesday, Oct. 21st.

Please take a minute to look at both applications and position descriptions. Also keep in mind that you don’t have to be a Hoofer leader to qualify, and that you might know someone who would be a good fit who you could recommend to apply.

These are Presidential appointments, however VP-Programs Mindy Cummings (mjcummings@wisc.edu) and Secretary Nick Clarens (clarens@wisc.edu) will be reviewing all applications and helping in the screening proccess. Please feel free to contact either of them and get those applications in!

Thank you and get out there and enjoy the fall weather before we transition into winter sports!

Best,
Paul

Canoe Lake Lesson Sat 10:30 AM

From: Carl Zimm
-----------

I am offering a canoe lake lesson this Saturday, 8 Oct, starting at 10:30 AM, and finishing about noon. Meet at the boathouse at the Memorial Union lakeshore. This lesson teaches how to work as a team to make a tandem canoe go where you want. Outing membership required (bring your card to get it signed off if you can). This lesson gives the canoe lake rating needed to go on club quietwater canoe trips, and to canoe on lake Mendota when it is warm enough (which won't be much longer this fall). Dress for the very cold (5 C) weather and possible rain. Leave anything you don't want to get wet from paddle splash behind. We will stay close to shore to allow rapid egress in case of accidental upset. Room for about 5 more paddlers: email me to sigh up.

Asheville, NC Cheoah River Release Nov. 7

From: Ned Rubert
---------

I confirmed that there is a release on the Cheoah River (near Asheville, NC; class IV) on Saturday Nov. 7. Would anyone be interested in running a 3-day weekend trip to the southeast in early November for this and other great rivers? The release is only for one day, and candidate rivers for the other days might include the Ocoee, French Broad or Nantahala. This will be a private trip unless someone with a the appropriate leader rating is willing to lead (in which case, the trip would probably only be open to R4s).

Trip Swap: Neenah Creek Canoeing is changed to Hiking Ice Age Trail

From: Nan Huai
------------
Hi, Hoofers:
Sunday Oct 11 forecast involves cold temp and wind, which does not go well with canoeing. But we can still get active and see the fall colors even on a cold day! So we are swapping the canoeing trip (Neenah Creek) for a hike on a section of the Ice age trail, near Lodi (about 45 minutes north of madison). There is a marsh near the trail and it's crane habitat. The landscape varies between prairie and hardwood forest. You will be able to hear and see the cranes, see lots of wild flowers (before they freeze), and the forest that's rich in color. We will do a shuttle and leave cars at Lodi. We hike to Lodi and hopefully have some food at a local cafe.

Time to meet: 8:30am (This is half hour earlier than the Neenah trip announced)
Gear: wear comfortable hiking shoes/ boots. Wear warm layers and rain jacket/pants (just in case). Hat and gloves, please avoid cotton.

Bring: water, snacks (nuts, gorp, or energy bars); cash (2.00 for your driver and cash for food after the hike); camera (optional)
Total distance: About 4-5 miles varied terrain.

Sign up: email Nan at happyforest@yahoo.com
In your email, please specify:
1. Do you have a car? and Are you willing to drive?
2. If yes, how many people (including yourself) can your car take?

Hope to see you on Sunday!

When: Leave from Park Street Circle on Friday, October 9 at 6:00pm - Return to PSC by 4:00pm on Saturday, October 10
Where: Devil's Lake State Park (an hour north of Madison)
Who: Anyone fierce enough to brave a cold night of camping and who wants to go climb some stuff (beginners welcome!)
Cost: $10 (this includes the campsite fee, food for breakfast and lunch on Saturday plus marshmallows, and fuel for the drivers) to be given to me or your driver before you leave Madison!
Why: Ever had your morning coffee while watching the sunrise above the Wisconsin River valley when the leaves are turning? You'll also learn how to say "That's what she said" in French!

Camping: It will be COLD this weekend! The overnight low for Friday is 31F! I'll bring enough tents for everyone and try to grab as many sleeping pads as possible, but make sure you have a warm sleeping bag or bring lots of blankets! We're just car camping, so pack heavy!

Food: Trip cost will pay for breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Things you may want to bring on your own: money for dinner on Friday night or snack for later, something to drink on Friday night (but remember we're getting up around 4am and we have advanced wake-up tactics), and hot drink mix/tea for in the morning.

Climbing: All climbing levels are welcome but if we run low on space, preference will be given to those who are belay certified. Again, dress warm: its a high of 43F on Saturday! I'll already be near the lake on Friday, so I won't be able to open the cage for gear. If you need club gear, please respond to this email before Thursday at 11:00pm with your shoe size and harness size (regular or large) so I can grab gear for you.

Please respond to this email if you're interested in going or call me (even if you've already told me you're going), do NOT just show up at PSC. If you have any questions please ask! My number is 608-669-4227. - Niki

Well known across the great state of Wisconsin, volunteers from the Hoofer Outing Club are needed for trail maintenance on the Ice Age Trail!

On the weekend of October 9-11, let's do some trail work! The Mobile Skills Crew of the Ice Age Trail will be hosting an event in Taylor County (like a 3.5 hour drive north/northwest of Madison). The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is an 1100+ mile footpath that is found entirely within the state of Wisconsin and generally follows the extent of the glaciers. However, the trail is not done yet which is why we are building trail and also doing trail upkeep! Food and fun is guaranteed. No ratings or experience required.

This is how a Mobile Skills Crew event works. Volunteers from across the state gather for a weekend and accomplish a huge amount of work. The work is dirty (sometimes), physical (most of the time), and very rewarding (all of the time... in retrospect). In return for our volunteer efforts on the trail, we are provided three wholesome cooked meals during a full day of work. We will be camping on site at Wood Lake County Park. A typical day goes something like this... Breakfast served at 6:45am. Leave camp at 7:45 and be at work site at 8ish. Work until Noon and break for lunch in the field. Resume work for the afternoon and quit before 5. Get back to camp, clean up, lounge, and then eat supper at 6:30. Hang out around the campfire for however long you deem appropriate and then go to bed.

What you need for this trip. Tent (Hoofer Outing Club has these), sleeping pad (HOC has some), your own sleeping bag, leather work gloves (HOC has a few pairs), clothes to do work in, clean clothes to be comfortable and warm in, and sturdy footwear (ie, hiking boots) are a must. Dress for the weather and also physical, dirty work.

Here is the plan. Work occurs all day Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning (quit at noon). It is most likely that a caravan will leave Friday after work/class. If people are interested, it is certainly possible to work Friday as well. This trip is fairly cheap... bring $ for gas and any road food.

Drop me an email stating your interest in participating and when you can leave Madison. Interested people will then be emailed regarding possible carpools from Madison. Any questions, comments, concerns, drop me an email.

The Hoofer Sailing Club will collaborate again this year with UW-Madison's Horticulture Department for the 5th Annual Giant Pumpkin Regatta, on the Memorial Union lakefront on Saturday, October 10 at 12:30 pm.
Horticulture students who grew large pumpkins this fall will carve them out and use them as makeshift boats (stabilized by tractor-tire inner tubes) to paddle over a course in a series of races. These pumpkins are about three feet in diameter.
Anyone who wants to participate will have the opportunity to race in their own giant pumpkin. All are welcome to watch this unique race from the Terrace, but spectators will not be allowed on Hoofer piers.

Paddlin Wolf IV Sat 10/10 if we get a little more water....

From: Christophe Stoelinga
------------

Hello Hoofers,

Rain is on the forecast, and if this comes true, we might be able to paddle section IV of the Wolf on Saturday (October 10). If you want to join, you'll need an R3p paddling rating. Note that the other, easier, sections of the Wolf need more water and are, for now, quite a bit too low to be paddled. At 188 cfs currently, it is pretty close the 200cfs needed for a good paddle on section IV (below that level we won't go). If that sounds good to you, send me an email with your paddler rating, wether you have a car with boat racks and what cold when wet gear you have (you'll want at least a dry-top/wet suit, we might require R3p's to wear a full dry suit which you can rent). Cost would be $30 to paddle the section, $$ for gas and food on our way.

Wednesday evening - tour the Hoofer-built segment of the Ice Age Trail

From: Connie Lane
--------

Trip: Hike the Ice Age Trail north of Cross Plains
When: 5:15 pm, Wednesday, 7 October 09
Where: meet at the Park Street Circle (PSC)
Leaders: Connie Lane, Matt Kaufmann
Cost: $1, plus money for food/ice cream

Wednesday evening Matt "Navs" Kaufmann and I will lead a tour of the Ice Age Trail segment near Cross Plains that Hoofer Outing Club members built last winter. Our trail segment is about 15 miles from campus.

For those of you who don't know it, the citizens of Wisconsin are building an 1100-mile trail for the National Park Service along the edge of the glaciers of the last ice age. Since Hoofers use trails for many of our outdoor activities, many of us have been building trail as a community service project. Sometimes (as in this coming weekend), we participate in Mobile Skills Crew weekends, when 300-400 people converge on a spot and build trail or trail structures (bridges, retaining walls, boardwalks) for a local chapter that cannot build big structures on its own, or sometimes we work on fairly simple trail in the Madison ares. Last winter we built a segment for the Dane county chapter of the IANST (Ice Age National Scenic Trail) as part of a larger area known as Table Bluff, and we have agreed to build another local segment this winter.

Wednesday evening Navs and I will take you to hike the segment built last winter. We hope that you decide after seeing the segment that you want to pitch in and help build the trail. Trail building days/events are always fun and in very scenic locations. We can guarantee you, once you build some trail, you will never take it for granted again. We'll answer any questions you have, either about our local trail or Mobile Skills Crew weekends, as we hike the trail.

We'll stop in for refreshments (probably frozen custard) before returning to Madison. We should be back by 8 or 8:30.

We have room for ten people. Let me know if you can drive and how many you can take. I'll let you know if I need for you to drive.

Backpacking Interest Group

From: NAVS!
-----------

Hello Hoofers!

After this week's Tuesday meeting, let's have a backpacking interest group meeting. All Hoofer Outing Club members and potential members (ie, your friends) are welcome! Let's plan on 8ish in Der Stiftskeller near the pool tables.

'Tis the season for backpacking the Midwest! Think no bugs, cooler temperatures, the changing leaves, and campfires. We will meet to discuss all things backpacking.... recalling tales of adventure, gear!, locations in and beyond Wisconsin (Kettle Moraine to the Porkies to the Sierra Nevada), etc. But most importantly, this meeting will bring together all those interested in packing the back. Think about where and when you want to go now and come to the BP'ing interest group meeting ready for a lively discussion!

See you there!

Hoofer Social Monday Oct 5th in Rathskellar

From: Morgan Leider
---------------

Normally I'd ignore football and go climbing on Monday nights, but this is one game for the history books for Wisconsonites that I just can't miss. Monday night, Vikings vs. Packers, see Farve play his old team!!

(Don't worry climbers, Niki has offered to take over my climbing trip this Monday, so for people still looking to climb, the trip should still be leaving around 6:30, otherwise come find me in the Rathskellar and I'll figure out what's going on and get you set up for climbing.)

In order to secure a table, I'm going to be showing up at the Rathskellar around 5:30ish and claiming tables. You're welcome to come join me, and partake in lively conversations, jokes, football talk, DRINKS, outdoors talk, looking at the photos from my Grand Canyon trip 2 weeks ago, GIANT PRETZELS, talk about my and YOUR future trips, and asking me embarrassing personal questions!! YES! Anything goes for this one! And then the football game will start!

Where and When??? Rathskellar, starting to gather at 5:30 for the 7:30 game. No people that's not too early! If we don't get enough people there to claim tables other people will steal the tables. And you can work on your homework there if you want. And if you have math, engineering, and computer problems that you could use help with EVEN BETTER, about 90% of the guys in hoofers are engineers and someone is bound to be able to help you!

How do I know who this Morgan person is??? Well look for the big 6'3" guy with the shaved head. And if that doesn't work my cell is 608-957-3082.

What do you need??? Money for beverages and food. Although I can be fairly generous at times! (My sister for example tries the lost puppy dog face and hugs to get free ice cream, and it tends to work if she's been good.)

See you there!!!

-Morgan

From: Connie Lane
----------------

We should paddle Sunday.....There was good rain yesterday up north and the Red is runnable.
Sac veterans with rolling ability are welcome to come on this trip.....the latter know who they are, so don't be shy.
I am waiting to see how much the Wolf comes up before deciding which river we run. It would be nice if I could get one more (maybe two) to come as we have car and rack space. Let me know if you are interested.

Harold Bradley in Ken Burns' National Parks

Just thought you'd like to know that Harold Bradley is featured in Part 6 of Ken Burns' National Parks documentary (currently showing on PBS)!! That's the same Harold Bradley who founded Hoofers in 1931 and for whom the Bradley Hoofer Lounge is named. In the 1950s he helped prevent dams from being constructed in Dinosaur National Monument. http://www.pbs.org/nationalparks/people/behindtheparks/. Very cool.

If you get a chance, watch Part 6 of 'National Parks: America's Best Idea.' (Actually, watch the whole series if you have time.) If the 'Heeler' program is ever brought back, watching this documentary should be the first task new members undertake.

happy hoofing,
